Great to discover you , and so close! I am on Gadigal and Wangal land. Very much relate to your experience of seasons dysphoria from reading so many Northern nature writers while immersed in very different seasons and markers here. Easters with diminishing light and crisp mornings and still warm ocean currents. To me this is when the year deepens, and I get to read, write and reflect more. The last Wilderness is on my list now, Thnak you!

Ah you're a wintering fan! Have you read Katherine May's Wintering? It's so good and she really coined that term and captured the moment where people were starting to think about needing seasons of quietness and interiority and reflection. That's the up side for sure!

Thank you for your recommendations, Hannah. I'm currently writing a novel set in historical Scotland... so I've been reading a lot of Scottish-set books including Amy Liptrot's The Outrun & Nan Shepherd's The Living Mountain, both memoirs. I can now add The Last Wilderness to my TBR pile- thank you!

Oh I did not know it had been made into a movie! I would love to see that. My fiction novel is actually set in Orkney where her memoir is set ... only it's the 17th century :-)

Living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - I am inspired by the wild places in the world and people who walk them. I can't always get the books from the UK or other countries - thanks for the link to purchase. I am especially interested in the Scotish book. My mother-in-law is profoundly hearing imparied and I also work as a teacher in a building that shares a program with DHH students. Thanks so much for your review. Be well!

Ah so glad you liked the sound of these. Yes Ansell is amazing on deafness, well worth a read. Bookshop.org has this one if that's easier! https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-last-wilderness-a-journey-into-silence-neil-ansell/18074757?ean=9781472247124
